HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada said observing the Earth Hour is a symbolic demonstration to raise public awareness on the importance of conserving natural resources and thus protecting the Earth from climate change and global warming.
Dr al-Sada said this in remarks on the margin of Kahramaa’s celebration of the event yesterday.
Last year, Qatar and 162 other countries in the world took part in the demonstration, which takes place every last Saturday of March from 8:30 to 9:30pm, where unnecessary lights and electrical appliances are switched off, he said.
Besides joining countries of the world, Qatar supports efforts to raise awareness about energy conservation, he added noting that this event has become an annual tradition in Qatar.
On Kahramaa’s success in the rationalisation of energy consumption through the “Tarsheed” programme, the minister said that there is a special department to carry out Tarsheed’s projects which have come a long way, stressing that Kahramaa will continue to work in the implementation of various programmes to rationalise energy consumption in order to meet the aspirations of Qatar.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports marked the Earth Hour, by switching off lights in its tower and a number of affiliated institutions.
The lights were switched off for an hour, confirming the ministry’s commitment to the criteria of sustainability, energy conservation, rationalisation of consumption and raising awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources and reducing pollution in order to create a safe, stable and healthy environment.
The ministry expressed its commitment to preserving the environment and addressing the phenomenon of climate change and energy saving at the local level.
A number of sports clubs, youth centres and specialised centres participated in the event.
‘Friends of Nature’ programme, and the ‘A Flower Each Spring’ programme in co-operation with Ezdan Shopping Mall also celebrated the Earth Hour.
The Primary Health Care Corp (PHCC) also joined Qatari society and the world in celebrating the Earth Hour by switching off the lights in the PHCC headquarters and the outside lights of the health centres for one hour.
