HE the Foreign Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani participated yesterday in the Ministerial Plenary for the Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS, after receiving an invitation from US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The meeting covered the latest developments of Syria and Iraq.
The participants also exchanged views on ways that can permanently defeat ISIS.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Foreign Minister said that international counter-terrorism efforts and the ones specifically targeting ISIS cannot succeed unless the main reasons for extremism are dealt with.
He said that the political, economic, and social conditions, as well as the shocking human rights violations were nurturing the suitable environment for terrorism to grow.
Today’s meeting was the first time since December 2014 that all 68 members of the coalition took part.
Meanwhile, HE the Foreign Minister also participated yesterday in the Paris group meeting on Syria at the French embassy in Washington.
The meeting reviewed developments in Syria and means of co-operation to reach a settlement for the Syrian crisis.
The minister stressed the need to reach a comprehensive political solution in Syria to save it from the threat of disintegration.
Foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, France, Jordan, UAE and Turkey took part.
