Chinese girls dominated on day one of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup at the Aspire Dome yesterday.
The opening day of the four-day event saw qualification held for five apparatus – two in women’s and three in the men’s, with top eight qualifying for the finals.
In both the women’s apparatus, China’s gymnasts topped the scoresheets to qualify for the final. In the vault, 17-year-old Yan Wang topped the qualification with a total 14.566 points. The Rio Olympic bronze medallist in the team event, Wang’s vault was better than of Uzbekistan’s 41-year-old Oksana Chusovitina.
The 1992 Olympic team gold medallist had topped the Vault event with a solid performance in Baku, where the last World Cup series was held last week. Chusovitina, however, had to settle for second place (14.249) yesterday but will be aiming to clinch the top spot in the final tomorrow. The fast-rising Emily Little of Australia was third (14.100) and will be the one to watch out for the in the final
On the uneven bars, Chinese had a 1-2 finish in the qualification. Huan Luo put in a solid routine to come first with an aggregate of 14.433, followed by her compatriot Tingting Liu in second (14.366).
Rianna Mizzen of Australia was third (14.1330).
Hosts Qatar had a disappointing day as its men’s gymnasts failed to qualify for the final. Ahmed al-Dayani, who had finished a creditable seventh in the last year’s World Cup in Doha, was off-colour this time as the Qatari came a distant 23rd in the Pommel Horse.  Al-Dayani failed to get into a momentum, while also picking up a penalty as he tallied 11.600 points.
In the same event, 2012 Olympic champion Krisztian Berki topped the sheets with an excellent routine as the Hungarian finished with 14.833 points.
Another Qatari in action, Ahmed Mosa also came 23rd in the Floor Exercise. Mosa is competing in his first senior event and he will only get better after yesterday’s valuable experience. Pablo Braegger of Switzerland was the best gymnast in the event, picking up 14.133 points for his effort
