HE the Foreign Minister’s special envoy on counter-terrorism and disputes’ settlements, Dr Mutlaq bin Majed al-Qahtani, has warned against linking violence and terrorism with religion, beliefs and ideologies.
Addressing a meeting on the United Nations’ counter-terrorism efforts, al-Qahtani expressed regret at the increasing tendency of linking terrorism and extremism to religion.
He stressed the importance of dialogue on a national, regional, and international level on protection against extremism. He highlighted the role of Doha Centre for Interfaith Dialogue in promoting a spirit of understanding between different cultures and faiths.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations HE ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bint Seif al-Thani said that Qatar remains committed to all UN counter-terrorism efforts.
HE Sheikha Alia praised the plans of national and regional entities concerned with counter-terrorism and preventing extremism. She said that violent extremism is one of the biggest security challenges facing the world. Qatar’s permanent representative stressed the need for strong measures at the national, regional, and international levels. She also highlighted the important role that sustainable development and human rights can play in counter-terrorism efforts.
Sheikha Alia stressed that extremism cannot be defeated without partnership between the UN and its member-countries as well as NGOs.
She highlighted Qatar’s commitment to all UN’s counter-terrorism efforts. The country was keen on co-operating with all international authorities to end violent extremism, the ambassador added.
She also reviewed Qatar’s efforts to quell the threat of terrorism, including strategic partnership agreements signed with the UN in that field.
