New Zealand defeated South Africa by six runs in the second one-day international in Christchurch on Wednesday to level the five-match series at 1-1.

The Black Caps set South Africa a target of 290 after losing the toss and being sent into bat, aided by an unbeaten 102 from Ross Taylor.

The tourists fell just short making nine for 283 in reply, with Dwaine Pretorius's 26-ball half century a highlight.
