Major development works spanning several months are about to begin on Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, a vital stretch connecting C-Ring Road with D-Ring Road, and closures will be carried out on the road to facilitate implementation of the project.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that it will commence work in Phase I of the Ali Bin Abi Talib Street development project on Saturday as part of its efforts to develop the road network in Doha.

The works are part of the sixth phase of a project that involves the development of roads and roundabouts in various areas in greater Doha, according to a press statement from the authority, adding that all phases of the Ali Bin Abi Talib Street development project are expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2017.

Phase I of the Ali Bin Abi Talib Street project includes converting the Al Maahed and Al Qafila roundabouts into signal-controlled intersections. It also involves the development of Ali Bin Abi Talib Street to include three lanes and a service road in each direction. These are in addition to developing infrastructure such as the stormwater drainage network, street lighting and landscaping, and installation of interlocks while protecting existing utilities, Ashghal has explained.

Further, the project comprises the development of Al Maahed Street in Salata and Al Qafila Street, which connects Salwa Road and Ali Bin Abi Talib Street. Works include widening these streets to two lanes in each direction in order to enhance traffic capacity.

During the project works, two lanes will remain open to traffic in each direction on Ali Bin Abi Talib Street. The right lanes will be closed for those coming from Ali Bin Abi Talib Street towards Al Maahed Street and for those turning left from Ali Bin Abi Talib Street onto Al Maahed Street. Road users will be able to use Al Qafila Roundabout as an alternative (see map).

Also, the right lane will be closed for those coming from Ali Bin Abi Talib Street towards Al Qafila Street while keeping Al Qafila Street open from Salwa Road towards Ali Bin Abi Talib Street. Access roads to residential buildings and business institutes will remain open throughout the project period, the authority has said.

Ashghal has installed signboards on the site to alert drivers during the work period and requested all road users to abide by speed limits and follow road signs to ensure everyone’s safety.

This is part of a series of projects that Ashghal is implementing to improve the road network in all areas, including converting roundabouts into signal-controlled intersections and widening some streets to increase their capacity, the statement adds.
