The body of Filipino expatriate Ed Bacay, who died in a road accident on December 25, is expected to be repatriated to his home country soon, the Philippine embassy in Doha has said.

Speaking to Gulf Times, the embassy said they are awaiting the results of the police investigation.

According to sources, Bacay, an engineer who actively participated in various cycling competitions and races in the country, was a member of the United Filipino Mountain Bikers Qatar (UFMBQ).

He was with six other Filipino cyclists on a morning ride on the fatal day, said one of the sources, who was supposed to join the group but could not due to some other development.

The victim’s last post on his Facebook account was on December 18 when he uploaded several pictures of a ride from the Ceremonial Road to another location, captioned as “Searching for the uncharted trails. Discovering new places. This is just the beginning of a new and exciting 2017 UFMBQ rides.”

Bacay had participated in several races of the group held in different locations in Qatar, including the UFMBQ Race 2 Riding in Tandem held on December 16, his Facebook posts show.

He was a resident of Makati but known to be an Ilocano (who is a native of Ilocos region in northern Philippines). His body is in the Hamad hospital morgue.

About 400 cyclists had organised an event in Doha on December 30 in honour of Bacay.

Filipino community members, particularly cycling groups, are saddened by his untimely demise.
