The Qatar Cricket Association (QCA) will launch the new edition of its prestigious Qatar Airways Cricket Tournament at 3:30pm at the Asian Town Cricket Stadium, Industrial Area, tomorrow.
The annual tournament, sponsored by Qatar Airways, is a much-awaited event on the QCA calendar, with 64 teams contesting for top honours across four different divisions.
Not only Qataris, players from various expatriate communities are also involved in the tournament.
Ali Akbar Farabi, manager for Ticketing Operations, Qatar, will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony. QCA president MA Shahid and QCA general secretary Manzoor Ahmad will also be present on the occasion.
Expressing his gratitude to Qatar Airways and its Group Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker for extending their support to the tournament, Shahid said, “The Qatar Cricket Association and Qatar Airways have been shaping cricket in Qatar for a long time. We owe a great deal of our progress to Qatar Airways and HE Akbar al-Baker. Without their support, it would not have been possible to develop cricket.”
He also added, “We are all set for the start of the tournament this week. I am sure that we will witness high-level of competition and sporting spirit by all the players and teams once again.”
Ahmad added, “The Qatar Airways Cricket Tournament is played at a massive level every year. There are 64 teams in four different divisions. There will be eight teams each in the Premier and Division A categories. The Divisions B and C will feature 24 teams each.”
Talking about the format, Ahmad said, “The format will be the league cum knock-out so that the participating teams can get maximum possible exposure. This helps our players showcase their skills, temperament and team work. We are rapidly moving ahead on the right track and it is due to our long association with a committed organisation like Qatar Airways.”
