Qatar’s highest population ever was recorded in November 2016, according to figures released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS).

While the population in November was approximately 2,637,000, it fell to 2,597,000 at the end of the year.
Usually, the population falls in December every year as a large number of residents are away from the country, especially in the latter half of the month. This year also there was a similar fall in population in December.
According to the MDPS figures, there was a 1.5% fall in the population in December compared to the figures of previous month.
However, the MDPS adds that there was an increase of approximately 7.3% in the latest figure compared to the population in December 2015.
As a large number of residents are expected to return from vacation this month, as usually happens every year, the population is likely to surpass the November 2016 figures when the next figure is released on the first day of next month.
The population crossed the 2.6mn mark for the first time in October 2016. The smallest population figure of 2016 was in the month of July when there were only 2,326,000 residents in the country. This was mainly owing to the summer vacation as a large number of the residents, especially expatriates, went on vacation.
