For the first time ever, fans are set to witness Qatar Stars’ biggest cricketing clash with the World Stars team, led by none other than Pakistan’s super star Shahid Afridi, better known in the cricketing world as Boom Boom Afridi. Pakistan’s former T-20 skipper, Afridi is currently out of the national team. However, he has vowed to make a comeback.
Afridi is not the only star in the visiting team’s line up. It is packed with many big names coming from different countries of the world.
Scheduled to take place at Asian Town ground tomorrow, the T20 cricket match will see World Stars in action including names such as Yusuf Pathan from India, Farveez Maharoof from Sri Lanka, Herschelle Gibbs from South Africa, Liam Plunkett from England, Mohammad Ashraful from Bangladesh, Jerome Taylor from West Indies, Nawroz Mangal from Afghanistan, Abdur Razzaq from Pakistan and Balaji from India.
“Almost all of the World Stars players are big names and have been especially invited for the event. We are expecting a thrilling contest which will hopefully be witnessed by a large crowd in Qatar,” Sajad Chaudhry, the organiser of the event told Community.
Another cricket match between Qatar Stars and Asian Stars was scheduled for the big day. However, it was cancelled after Qatar decided to observe the day with simplicity in solidarity with events happening in some Arab countries in the region. The Worlds clash with Qatar Stars however got a go ahead and will be held as planned.
Qatar Stars team holds a fairly good record on their local ground where they have been able to beat a team comprising former and current players of Pakistan’s national cricket team in the past. Captained by Iqbal Chaudhry, they would be up to the task again. “The team will be almost the same as the last year tournament with only a couple of changes. However, Pakistani batsman Umar Akmal and all-rounder Sohail Tanveer would play on the side of Qatar Stars,” said Chaudhry.
Captained by  Iqbal Chaudhry, the Qatar Stars team that took on Pakistan Stars in the past comprised Kamran Khan, Taimoor Sajjad, Faheem Sajjad, Rizwan Hussain, Asim Ali, Umar Taj, Zaheer, Rizlan, Bilawal Rana, Rohail Ali, Kamran Afzal, Faisal Baloch, Abbas Shah, Feroz and Irtizah Sajjad.
In their victory over Pakistan Stars in the first match, Qatar Stars had beaten the powerful team by 10 runs in a thrilling contest. Pakistan’s former opening batsman Nasir Jamshed had played a pivotal role in Qatar Stars’ victory, scoring 40 odd runs off just 24 deliveries to help the hosts set a competitive target.
“The match has generated a lot of buzz and we are expecting the stadium to be full for the big clash. Cricket fans in Doha would have a chance to see their biggest stars in action right in front of them,” said Chaudhry. This time the organisers had also arranged for a gala dinner with stars at a local hotel after the match for fans to have chance to meet their favourite players and interact with them. However, the event was also among the ones cancelled. The match will start at 5pm at the Asian Town stadium.
The cricketing season would not end with the end of this match. For the third time in a row, the local Indian community is organising the Third Nation Cup Cricket Tournament. Beginning December 18, the tournament is the initiative of Siraj Virani, the Managing Director of QAD NET QATAR.
It is open to all nationalities as the aim of the tournament is to let every community living in Qatar enjoy the game of cricket. All matches will be played at Old Ideal Indian School flood-lit cricket ground and one of the past Indian cricket team bowling sensation S Sreesanth will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony.
The chief organisers of the tournament are Imtiyaz Hasan, Dr Sanjay Kudri and Mohd Habibun Nabi, who is the co-ordinator.
