A group of 40 internationally renowned surgeons from five continents gathered in Doha recently for the first Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine master class in the region.
The three-day event, organised by the Orthopaedic and Sport Medicine Hospital - Aspetar, in collaboration with the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, took place at the state-of-the-art training facility in the hospital’s west wing.
The surgeons received lectures and training from 18 experts, including those from Aspetar. Renowned knee surgeon, Dr Freddie Fu, showed the advanced concepts of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, now being used by Aspetar.
In hosting the event, Aspetar aimed to further educate participants on the most common injuries that athletes usually face. The participants also discussed different medical challenges in performing their tasks, in addition to introducing the latest surgical advances for treating knee and shoulder injuries.
Aspire Zone Foundation acting CEO Mohamed Khalifa al-Suwaidi said the state-of-the-art facility will further advance Aspetar’s objectives, saying it is the only training facility of its kind in the Mena region.
He expressed confidence that the facility will contribute in developing surgical skills. It was also designed to provide the ideal environment for conducting surgical demonstrations using the latest technologies available.
Aspetar acting director general Dr Mohamed Ghaith al-Kuwari said the master class not only brought together internationally acclaimed experts under one roof but also provided opportunity for regional surgeons to participate and receive advanced medical education.
