A Doha Criminal Court has acquitted a mentally unstable man of the charges of premeditated murder and ordered his stay at the Psychiatry Department of Rumailah Hospital.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported on Monday that the court ordered the defendant to pay QR200,000 to the legal inheritors of the man he killed and QR20,000 as compensation for the injuries he caused to another.
According to the file of the case, the defendant, who was driving his vehicle, hit two expatriates who were waiting by the roadside. He stopped his vehicle, got down and jumped on one of them and fatally stabbed him with a knife several times, causing his death. He also stabbed the other man before fleeing.
A passerby saw the incident and reported the issue to the police, who managed to nab him a short time later.
The defendant was referred by the court for medical and psychiatric examination, which confirmed that he was not mentally responsible for his criminal act, as he suffered from a neurotic disease that gives him uncontrollable fits of anger.
He was declared unaccountable for his deeds during the time of the accident.
