There is no respite in sight from the sweltering conditions as high humidity levels are expected to continue next month.
Giving an overview of weather conditions in Doha in August, the Qatar Met Department yesterday stressed through online posts that high humidity was the most important characteristic of the month.
It is generally “very hot and uncomfortable” in August, the fourth month of the summer, due to increasing relative humidity, the Weather Office said.
There is no significant cloud or rainfall in August and the winds blow more frequently from the north and east, bringing moist air from the sea.
The Met Department also noted that sea temperatures reached their annual highest levels during August.
The highest temperature recorded in August was 48.6C in 2002, while the lowest was 22.4C in 1971, the Weather Office informed.
While it continues to be sultry in the country, the maximum temperature has dipped in many places, including Doha, and the trend is likely to continue.
Confirming this, the Met Department tweeted yesterday that the spell of high humidity and dropping mercury levels would continue until the weekend with a chance of mist at night.
The Weather Office also said conditions would be suitable for offshore activities until the weekend.
The highest temperature in the country yesterday was 45C, which was recorded in Karana, followed by 44C in Batna and Jumayliyah.
In the capital, the mercury level reached a high of 39C in the Qatar University area and 38C in the Doha airport area yesterday.
A number of other places, too, saw the maximum temperature drop to the mid/upper-30C levels, including Dukhan (37C), Al Rayyan (39C), Wakrah (36C) and Messaieed (38C).
The forecast for inshore areas today says hazy-to-misty conditions are likely in some places at first.
It will be hot during the day and some clouds are also expected along with relatively humid conditions by night.
Offshore areas, meanwhile, will see hazy to misty conditions at times.
Today, the maximum temperature will be 40C in Dukhan and Ruwais, 39C in Abu Samra and 38C in Doha, Messaieed, Wakrah and Al Khor.

Rumours quashed

The Qatar Met Department yesterday quashed rumours that the temperature would shortly reach 57-60C in the country. “This is not true. Temperatures are expected to be around their average (level) for this time of the year in the coming days,” the Weather Office tweeted in response to rumours on social media that the mercury level would shoot up in Qatar.
