Qatar along with members of the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), will today mark the anniversary of the signing of the Kuwait agreement on the protection of marine environment.
The agreement was signed in 1978.
The event will be held this year under the theme of “The Protection of Marine Biodiversity is Our Responsibility” to shed light on the issue of marine biodiversity.
Dr Abdul Rahman Abdullah al-Awadi, Executive Secretary of ROPME, said the Kuwait agreement has stressed the preservation of the region’s environment from all types of pollutants that contribute to the elimination of some species and the destruction of ecosystems.
Under the agreement three ROPME protocols have been adopted.
Al-Awadi said biodiversity represents all forms of life on Earth, including ecosystems, animals, plants, fungi, micro-organisms and genetic diversity.
Biological diversity is usually a measure of the health of biological systems and it also contributes to the improvement of human life, increases his well-being and provides the fundamental basis for life on Earth, al-Awadi said.
The Regional Environment Day is celebrated on April 24 every year, with the aim of promoting co-operation and solidarity between the countries of the region in order to protect the environment.
