A group of fishermen netted an 82kg Bagha Aiir fish from the Teesta river in Rangpur district yesterday.
Hundreds of people of all ages of the area as well as highway passengers gathered there to have a look at the fish after hearing the news.
Like every day, local fishermen Nitai Das, Jharu Das, Nirmal Das and Habibur Rahman went to the river for fishing, set their three nets in the river water and caught some small fishes till the afternoon.
“After fishing quite some time, we sensed something heavy in our nets and finally caught the Bagha Aiir fish after struggling for an hour when our colleague Habibur Rahman sustained little injury as the fish hit him with the tail,” Jharu Das said.
“Later we found the fish weighed 82kg,” the fishermen said, adding that they never netted, or even found, such a big-sized fish anytime in the past during their long professional life.
However, the fishermen had to sell the tasty and rare species of fish at throwaway price of only 20,000 taka to a bigger fish trader on the spot as they could not carry the same to the bigger towns or cities.
Now-a-days, fish fairs are held at this time of the year across Bangladesh. This is not one of those usual fairs where craft items from weavers and potters are the main attractions. This is a fair where people rush for the love of fish, all kinds of fresh water fish.
Fishermen and fish traders from the entire wait through the whole year for an opportunity to be present at the fairs with rare species and giant sizes of local, fresh water fish.
