Qatar University (QU) president Dr Hassan Rashid al-Derham, staff, faculty, students and their families joined celebrants across Qatar yesterday in celebrating National Sport Day.
Through its Sports and Recreation Section in the Student Activities Department, QU conducted a series of sporting and fitness events on its campus and at Katara.
The activities headlined “Sports Bring Us Together” aimed to promote sports and healthy lifestyle throughout the community. They were organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Community College of Qatar (CCQ), and Katara, the official host.
HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi and CCQ president Dr Ibrahim Saleh al-Naimi joined the activities organised by QU at Katara.
At QU Sports Hall, QU female students participated in a number of sport-related and recreational activities such as yoga, zumba, strength and conditioning,
and bubble ball games.
At Katara, the activities programme included a March Competition for kids (1km) and adults (2.5km), a skydiving show performed by a QU team, and maritime activities such as volleyball and football. A sideline exhibition featured two information booths. Visitors were provided with information on sportive and healthy lifestyles, fitness,
and nutrition.
These activities are part of QU’s contribution to highlighting the health benefits of sports and fitness in line with the National Health Strategy and QNV 2030, QU associate vice president for Student Life and Services Abdulla al-Yafei said, adding, “QU is demonstrating the importance of exercise for building a healthy community engaging people from all walks of life and age groups.”
Asmaa al-Naemi, head, sports and recreation section, said: “This event highlights QU’s commitment to strengthening strong links with the society and engaging the community on the importance of following a healthy lifestyle through sports.”
