Qatar University (QU) Sports and Recreation Section in the Student Activities Department has launched its celebrations for National Sport Day.
The activities headlined “Sports Bring Us Together” are organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Community College of Qatar (CCQ), and Katara. They include a series of sporting and fitness events on QU campus and at Katara to promote sports and healthy lifestyles.
The programme will include a number of sport-related and recreational activities such as yoga, zumba, strength and conditioning, and bubble ball games, at QU Sports and Recreation Female Section. This will run alongside the programme at Katara that will feature a March Competition for kids (1km) and adults (2.5km), a skydiving show by a QU team, and maritime activities such as volleyball and football. A sideline exhibition featuring two information booths will engage visitors on sportive and healthy lifestyles, fitness, and nutrition.
Abdulla al-Yafei, associate vice president, Student Life and Services, QU said:  “QU is demonstrating the importance of a healthy society in the country’s development and progress. We are proud to participate in this national event that reflects the country’s growing reputation as a sporting capital. This is part of QU’s commitment to strengthening links with the society and promoting community awareness on adopting sports, fitness and nutrition.”
CCQ president Dr Ibrahim Saleh al-Naimi said: “This event reflects the vision of Qatar’s leaders, and their belief in sports’ core role in building the community and ensuring its development and progress. It also shows CCQ’s commitment to encouraging students to participate in this annual event, and highlighting the importance of daily physical exercise for the health and welfare of society.”
Katara Operations deputy general manager Ahmed al-Sayed said “Katara is keen to diversify and increase the sports and events of National Sport Day with over 80 events. They are presented by more than 40 entities and institutions across Qatar targeting all age groups. They include marine and aerial activities, athlete games, basketball, soccer, and beach handball, as well as health tips and medical check-ups”.
According to an official from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the event highlights its commitment to encouraging and motivating its staff and their families and the wider community in general to practise sports in their everyday life.
