Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will come to the rescue when 2014 Davis Cup champions Switzerland face the Netherlands in a September 18-20 World Group payoff tie.
Swiss Tennis confirmed that their elite duo—who did not play in the champions’ 3-2 first-round loss to Belgium last March—would be in the squad which will battle to stay in the elite Davis group.
The Swiss last defeated the Dutch on a home court in 1983; the Swiss venue must be selected by early August.
“We are very excited to announce that both Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka have confirmed their presence at the Davis Cup playoff tie,” read a Swiss Davis Cup Facebook post. “The venue will be confirmed next week as well as the starting date for ticket sales.”
Federer and Wawrinka led the Swiss to a first Davis Cup title last November over France.
Participation is important for the pair who won the 2008 Olympic doubles gold medal in Beijing. Players who wish to compete next summer in Rio must make them themselves available for Davis Cup.
Wawrinka is to miss next week’s Gstaad clay event with a shoulder injury while Wimbledon finalist Federer has been on a charity tour of Africa on behalf of his federation and will return at the Montreal Masters starting the week of August 10—two days after the father of four ranked second in the world turns 34.
