Lekhwiya once again underlined their supremacy in local football with a facile 5-0 victory over Qatar Sports Club in the second semi-final of the Qatar Cup yesterday.
The QSL champions led 2-0 at half-time and scored three more in the second half to set up a title clash with El Jaish on May 1.
Former Qatar Sports Club player Sebastian Soria put Lekhwiya ahead in the eighth minute after knocking down a long pass from Chico Flores to score with a powerful effort and Youssef Msakni consolidated in the 43rd minute with another shot from close range.
Soria then unluckily had a goal disallowed for off-side just before the half-time whistle but assured of their dominance Lekhwiya didn’t make a big issue out of it.
Qatar Sports Club had been a force to reckon with in local football a few years ago but before falling on bad times. However, they showed great resolve this season to finish fourth in the Qatar Stars League to qualify for the Cup tournaments.
But Lekhwiya simply were a different zone yesterday as Qatar Sports Club struggled to get going. In the end, even a 5-0 thrashing appeared kind as Lekhwiya went about their business in a relaxed manner.
Lekhwiya went 3-0 up in the 78th minute through Mohamed Moosa, who easily shot past Qatar Sports Club goalkeeper Mohamed Mubarak after receiving a pass from Soria.
Five minutes from close, Msakni provided the assist for Mohamed Razzaq, who timed his run to perfection to beat the off-side trap and netted from close.
Razzaq finished off in style in the dying seconds after profiting from a defensive lapse and stabbing the ball home.
Lekhwiya coach Michael Laudrup was pleased with his team’s comprehensive victory.
“It was a great effort from the team because knockout tournaments can prove tricky if you take your rivals team for granted,” the Dane said.
“In the end what matters is goals and we can’t complain after such an emphatic victory.”
