Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell have announced that they will hold the Koora Time World Cup on National Sport Day 2014. The tournament will kick off at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Aspire Zone. It is expected to run for eight consecutive hours until the winning team is crowned champion.

In addition to the tournament, there will be a dedicated Fan Zone and fun and entertaining activities for kids. Participation in the Koora Time World Cup will be complimentary and online registration will be open in January 2014.

The Koora Time World Cup is part of Koora Time, a five-year sustainable initiative created by the QFA and Qatar Shell that is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Qatar’s youth through football.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmad al-Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association, stated, “We are excited about the Koora Time World Cup. It is an opportunity for the whole family to get active and join in celebrating National Sport Day in an enjoyable environment. This event will mark the one year anniversary of the launch of the Koora Time initiative when we broke the Guinness World Record for the ‘largest 5-a-side football match’”.

Wael Sawan, Managing Director and Chairman of Qatar Shell companies, said, “We believe that more football will lead to healthier youth. We encourage everyone to join us, get active and represent their country at what will be the biggest sporting event on National Sport Day.  This initiative demonstrates our commitment to the Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar’s National Development Strategy 2011-2016, which seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of Qatar’s youth.”

Celebrated every second Tuesday of February, National Sport Day was inaugurated in 2012 by HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The National Sport Day is an official national holiday that aims to raise awareness about the importance of sports and its health benefits. Ministries, government departments, public and private sector organisations and sports clubs are all encouraged to organise sporting activities for the residents of Qatar.
