The Qatar Stars League is back after the international break with defending champions Al Sadd determined to raise their game after a below-par start to the season.

Rested and relaxed following a two-week break, Al Sadd play host to Al Arabi knowing that a win would signify a true return to form. This campaign started with frustrations for both teams.

After getting things their own way for most of last season, Al Sadd struggled in the early part of the season as rival teams took points off them easily. However, slowly but surely, they are coming to life.

Khalfan Ibrahim is starting to sparkle. Raul is conducting play with all his experience and skill and elsewhere the quality Sadd undoubtedly have is shining through. And yet, in a season full of twists and turns, those factors count for nothing against an Al Arabi side capable of competing with the best the QSL has to offer.

Incredibly, Uli Stielike’s side have won just two games so far. Their defending has been raw at times, highlighted by the 11 goals conceded in just eight matches. But when the Dream Team have clicked they’ve been great to watch, scoring goals and impressing with a real attacking flair.

One thing these sides have in common is the steely spirit running through the spine of the team. Neither coach settles for anything less than 100 per cent commitment. Neither Hussein Amotta or Stielike are happy for their players coming off the pitch at full-time having given anything other than every ounce of energy they can spare.

It’s difficult to say who needs victory the most. Al Sadd crave three points because it takes them one step closer to proving they really can defend their title. Yet Al Arabi will give everything for the victory that takes them back into contention for a Champions League place.

Meanwhile, Al Gharafa coach Zico has promised his side will be QSL title contenders this season. The Brazilian finds his team in sixth spot, just seven points behind leaders El Jaish. Zico is adamant that’s a manageable gap to overcome with less than half the season gone.

He said: “We’re preparing very well for this match against Umm Salal. We welcome back quite a few players from international duty, who we will need because this will be a tough game.” Umm Salal coach Gerard Gilil said: “I have a lot of respect for Gharafa and what they are trying to do.

“We’re focused on trying to win the points and seeing where that takes us. Our team is young and dynamic but sometimes because of that you perhaps don’t get the results you want.
