Power Horse Energy Drink swept to their second win over Batang Isarog, 72-63, to win the Subaru Cup 2012 (Division 1) organised by Pinoy Basketball Qatar (PIBAQ) at the jam packed Al Gharafa Training Gym. The result left the third match in the best-of-three series redundant.
It was a sweet victory for the new champions after several attempts in the past seasons.
Batang Isarog rallied by maintaining their momentum in the first half only to be upstaged by the hungrier Power Horse who broke away with a double-digit edge in the second half and never looked back until the final buzzer.
Ghassan al-Raahi, Field Sales Manager of Power Horse Qatar, was also present on the occasion.
It was however a different story in the best-of-three championship series in Division-2 when KIA Motors eked out a 82-81 win over title hopefuls Dukhan Ballers. A buzzer-beating basket by Aries Jose helped KIA Motors even the series 1-1.
Referees and table officials awarded the basket after George Luna, head table official, said he saw Jose had already released the ball in his inbound drive with still three seconds left in the game. Both teams will settle for the do-or-die rubber match next Friday.
The championship games which were attended by thousands of Filipino basketball aficionados also saw the presence of respected Filipino ABS-CBN TV news anchor Tina Monzon Palma, who is also programme director of Bantay Bata 163.
Palma led the awards ceremony after the games and was assisted by Allan Paul Paredes, marketing administrative of Subaru cars in Qatar, Ronald Arugay, marketing manager of McDonald’s Qatar, Wyngard Aligaga, country manager of The Filipino Channel in Qatar and Delfin Montenegro, TV news correspondent of The Filipino Channel-Middle East.
