Staff Reporter THE Supreme Council for Environment and Natural Reserves (SCENR) is to hold a series of races as part of Qatar Environment Day celebrations. Altogether, there would be six categories of races, Khalid Saleh, Environment Information and Culture Centre Manager at SCENR, told Gulf Times. The event is sponsored by Burger King, which will provide trophies and cash prizes to winners. All participants will also receive T-shirts. The race will be held on March 24 at 3.30pm from the Burger King outlet at the Al Markhiya roundabout. Participants will run towards Hamad bin Jassim School at Duhail, in the direction of Landmark. The full distance is “about 3km” while those with special needs will race for about 1.5km, the official said. The SCENR has invited all citizens and residents to take part in the event, which is held in collaboration with Qatar Athletics Association. The different categories for the race are people with special needs, children below 11, those between 11 and 15, between 16 and 21, between 22 and 34 and those above 35. Registration forms are available at Burger King outlets, between 6-9pm. The last date for submission is March 23. Applicants need to carry their ID and a photograph. The first prize in four categories - 12 years and above - will be QR1000. The first, second, third and fourth runners-up will receive QR800, QR500, QR300 and QR300 respectively. The first winner in the under-11 race will be given QR500. The runners-up will get QR300, QR200, QR100 and QR100 respectively. Non-cash prizes will be given to all special needs participants. Qatar Environment Day is marked on February 26 every year and this year’s theme is ‘Qatar and the Deserts of the World’. A variety of programmes are being held as part of the event. |
