QU project to promote engineering disciplines

Prof Sheikha al-Misnad presenting a memento to al-Attiyah as Drs al-Midfaa and Hasna look on
Qatar University’s College of Engineering has announced sponsors of its ‘Life is Engineering project’ (LIEP) and signed a co-operation agreement with Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF).
The LIEP sponsors are ExxonMobil, Qatar Shell, RasGas and Qatar Petroleum. QMMF will offer its Lusail facilities to project organisers and students for building car-kits and for a race to be held during the project camp during April 20-24.
QU will supervise the project design, development, and testing of the car-kits mechanisms, in addition to the methods and procedures that should be followed during the building of the cars.
QU president Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, vice president and chief financial officer Dr Humaid al-Midfaa, College of Engineering dean Dr Mazen Omar Hasna, and Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering head Dr Abdulmajid Hamouda were present during the announcement.
LIEP project consultant Dr Saud Abdul-Ghani, project manager Nayef al-Ibrahim, QMMF president Nasser Khalifa al-Attiyah, Exxonmobil’s HR manager Saud al-Arifi, Shell’s Qatarisation head Dr Jamal al-Amari, and RasGas training and development co-ordinator Khalifa al-Fadhala were also present.
Dr Hasna stated that the project aims to promote the disciplines of engineering among high school students to attract the largest possible number of Qatari students to the scientific and engineering majors of QU.
A series of management and technical workshops that focus on strengthening the spirit of challenge and accomplishment of students as well as other engineering skills for the building and testing of the car-kits has been launched.
“A Camp of Challenge is being organised during April 20-24 at Lusail, and students will build the car-kits,” he said.
The first phase of the project saw the participation of 48 students from Omar ibn al-Khattab Secondary School, Doha Independent Secondary School, Al Wakra Independent and the Abu Bakr Independent Secondary School.
The QMMF president observed that motor sport is an activity combining the skill of humans and the technology of machines.
“QMMF is developing the human side, the riders and drivers,” he said.
LIEP project manager al-Ibrahim said that the LIEP team consists of some distinguished students from Qatar, learning various disciplines at universities in the country.
