Philharmonic orchestra to perform on Wednesday
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will perform their next concert on Wednesday at the Aspire Hall in the Aspire Zone from 7.30pm.
The concert is sponsored by the Spanish embassy to promote the mutual influences of the “Spanish Guitar” and the Arab “Oud.”
The first part of the programme will be the 1843 born Norwegian composer and pianist Edward Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1.
In 1876, Grieg composed incidental music for the premiere of Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, at the request of the author.
It comprises four movements: Morning Mood; Death of Aase; Amitra’s Dance; and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Many of the pieces from this work became very popular in the orchestral suites or piano and piano-duet arrangements.
Marcel Khalife’s Andalusian Suite for Oud and Orchestra will follow in the first part of this programme with his own solo performance.
Khalife’s illustrious musical and artistic career spans more than 35 years with a production of more than 25 instrumental and lyrical works.
In 2005, Khalife was named Unesco Artist for Peace for his artistic achievements and humanitarian works. He joined QPO in 2008 as music adviser and resident composer.
In the second half, QPO will perform 20th century Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. The instrumentation of this famous work is unusual as rarely does the guitar face the forces of a full orchestra. Instead, the guitar is never overwhelmed, remaining the solo instrument throughout.
Of its three movements, the second is the best known, with its slow pace and quiet melody, introduced by the English horn, with a soft accompaniment by the guitar and strings.
Suite No. 1 of El sombrero de tres picos by Manuel de Falla will conclude the programme.
The guest conductor for the concert will be Andreas S Weiser, well known to classical music audiences in Doha since his debut with QPO at the Inaugural Concert in 2008 and subsequent performances throughout QPO’s first season.
As part of the four soloists in the programme, noted percussionist Bachar Khalife will accompany Marcel Khalife in the Andalusian Suite on tabla.
Leading Spanish guitarist Vicente Coves will be the solo guitarist. Another soloist in the programme will be Qatari oud player, Abdulaziz al-Haidus.
