The cluster bombs, situation in Pakistan, biotechnology, white phosphorus and economics are some of the issues to be discussed at the 5th annual Qatar Model United Nations (QMUN) 2009 conference, which got underway on Wednesday evening.
The conference organised by Qatar Academy, “involves 17 schools and a total of 600 students, as well as 200 participants in the cultural event of the opening ceremony”, QMUN director Cameron Janzen said.
He observed that QMUN’s ultimate task is to develop the attitude of giving.
“Success lies in giving”, he added, presenting Mother Theresa as example.
Qatar Academy director Greg Hedger welcomed the students and noted that their participation would have a positive impact on their future.
Sabour Mansar, the representative of Shell, the main sponsor of the QMUN conference said that he would be engaging the participant students or nations’ ambassadors, in issues such as economic security and climate change, as well as energy challenge and sustainable development.
QMUN secretary-general Yara Darwish pointed out issues that should be discussed, such as the world’s economy crisis, which is the result of greedy bankers and exploitation of the poor.
She highlighted that the humanity’s two greatest killers were starvation and obesity.
Darwish addressed the participants, saying that they could make a change and find solutions to issues like the world’s most developed countries continuing to be implicated in human rights abuses, while other nations make the preparations for nuclear war.
The QMUN film institute director Sara Alfardan announced the first QMUN film festival, which will be held in February 2010.
She explained that students interested to participate have to create pieces of work in sustainable development, environment, and human rights. |
