A Russian flight engineer was killed and five people injured when a chopper crash-landed in a remote mountainous region of west Nepal, airport officials said yesterday. The MI-8 helicopter, owned by private operator Manang Air, crashed while landing at Rudikot village in Humla district, 420km (262 miles) west of Kathmandu. “The Russian flight engineer was killed in the crash. Five people, including another Russian pilot, have survived but sustained injuries,” airport manager Utsav Kharel told AFP from Surkhet in west Nepal where the helicopter took off for the short flight. “The tail of the chopper hit the heli pad while landing causing the accident.” The chopper was carrying a cargo of foodgrains to supply the region which is not accessible by road. There were six people on board, including two Russians. “The injured are being airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment,” said the official, adding that they were out of danger. Private airlines in Nepal operate helicopters to connect to the rural mountainous region supplying daily essential goods and transporting people.
