BANGLADESHI socio-cultural forums in Qatar marked the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh with commemorative meetings. The Qatar chapter of the Bangabandhu Parishad held a discussion followed by a cultural function at the Doha Palace Hotel. Parishad president S M Faridul Haque paid tributes to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and others who fought for the liberation of Bangladesh. The Parishad’s acting general secretary Noor Alam urged the gathering to resolve all differences to realise Mujib’s dream of a prosperous Bangladesh. Senior vice-president Shafiqul Qader, vice-president M A Baten, Selimul Haque Chowdhury, Mohiuddin Morol, Ashraf Ali, Haris Miah, Shahab Uddin, Jahangir Alam, Mohamed Ismail Hossain, Sekendar Ali, Jahangir Alam Howlader,Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Tarit Babu also spoke. Sohrab Hossain Manik compered. A cultural programme was presented by Ram Pado Mandol Babu. Artistes who took part included Mukul, Anup, Jashim, Kamal, Wahab, Manik, Ismail, Mujib and Tasmima Khandoker. The Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) held a discussion to mark the day. Bidhan Chandra Barua chaired the function. Qamrul Hossain, Saidur Rahman Sabuj, Abu Hena, Harunur Rashid and Ahmed Jayed spoke on the occasion. Paying tributes to the martyrs of the liberation war, the speakers urged all Bangladeshis to be united under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina against the misrule of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government. The Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) organised a day-long programme at Aladdin’s Kingdom. BAL president Omar Farooque Chowdhury called on his countrymen to reaffirm the pledge to build a strong, prosperous and self-reliant Bangladesh. Paying tributes to the martyrs, general secretary Shamsuddin Mandol appealed to his countrymen to be aware of the conspiracy against national interests. “If the Khaleda Zia government hangs on to power, public misery will worsen,” he said. Mohamed Sheikh, Abu Musa, Mokhlesur Rahman, Monir Hossain, Moulana Abu Taher, Selim Jahangir, Didarul Alam, Mofizullah Khushi and Shamim Ahmed spoke at the meeting. Sports, games and various types of entertainment were also held. Members of the community from Shahania, Umm Salal Mahmud, Kharatia, Abu Hamour, Industrial Area and Najma attended the programme. The Bangladesh Qur’an-Sunnah Parishad also held a discussion to mark the day. Moulana Rashis Chowdhury who chaired the event, urged the government to take stern measures to prevent the ‘malicious’ propaganda against Bangladesh that has blighted the image of the nation at home and abroad. Vice-prsident Shamsul Alam alleged the opposition was trying to create anarchy in the country by enforcing repeated strikes without any valid ground. Nazrul Islam and Qamrul Ahsan Miah also spoke.
