Qatar urges donors to help Palestinians

New York: Qatar has urged all donor governments, institutions and organisations to make voluntary contributions to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) and to raise the quality of their contributions in order to improve the level and quality of services provided to the Palestinian refugees.
The Israeli aggression and the siege of the Gaza Strip has led to a deterioration in the humanitarian and living conditions of the Palestinian refugees.
The Gaza Strip is on the brink of an economic collapse, said Ahmad Ali al-Temaimi, First Secretary at the Office of Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, addressing the 46th session of the UN General Assembly on item (31) of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
Al-Temaimi noted the poor humanitarian situation of the refugees in the rest of the occupied Palestinian lands as a result of the continued restrictions on movement of the people and goods, and other Israeli practices that contravene the international law, particularly the international humanitarian law.
He pointed to the outstanding work being done by UNHCR staff to improve the overall situation of the Palestinian refugees in the areas of education, health and relief, despite the harassments by the Israeli authorities, and sometimes direct attack, as happened when the Israeli army directly targeted the UNRWA schools in Gaza.
HH Sheikha Mozah Nasser al-Misnad, the Unesco Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education, has condemned the attacks against the educational institutions in Gaza, and called upon the Security Council to come up with a plan aimed at making schools and educational institutions safe for students and their parents, he noted. - QNA
