Experts and researchers from over 59 countries are participating in Qatar University’s joint international technical conferences on Relational Methods in Computer Science (RelMiCs) and, Applications of Kleene Algebra (AKA), which opened yesterday at Ramada Hotel. This is the 11th RelMiCs and the sixth AKA. Spread over five days, conferences are being organised by QU’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the sponsorship of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) of Qatar Foundation. Welcoming the gathering QU vice-president for research Dr Hassan al-Derham stated that these conferences were held previously in countries like Brazil, Tunisia, Canada, UK, and Germany. Dr al-Derham also explained that the conferences are also synchronised with the emergence of important research projects in Qatar, mostly granted by the QNRF. The invited speakers are Prof Harrie de Swart (Chair of Logic, Department of Philosophy, Tilburg University, the Netherlands), and Prof Rohit Parikh (Distinguished Professor, CS, Math, Philosophy, Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate Center, US). Prof de Swart gave a presentation on “computational social choice using relational algebra and RelView and Prof Parikh on “Knowledge and structure in social algorithms”. QU’s College of Engineering dean Dr Mazen Hasna said that the event provides a good opportunity for the faculty and staff to meet researchers from around the world. Department of Computer Science and Engineering head Dr Qutaibah Malluhi noted that the conference was an important platform for sharing knowledge on fundamental research. SEC’s director Dr Nawal al-Sheikh and senior curriculum expert Mona al-Kuwari presented respectively on ‘Overview of SEC: Role, Mission and Vision,’ and ‘Research Skills Development: Its goals, the progress made in schools and the Unit’s accomplishments.’ |
