Hamad Medical Corporation will host second Qatar genetic symposium, “Advances in medical genetics” at the Hajar auditorium on October 31. Experts and researchers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Germany and Qatar will present papers and share research findings during the event. The symposium will highlight latest research, prevention strategies and new methods of treatment of genetic or hereditary diseases. It will also feature lectures on topics like dysmorphic syndromes, gene identification in Arab population, eurogenetic disorders among others. Dr Mohamad Ahmed Janahi, senior consultant at the paediatrics department, said: “The past year has been marked by major achievements in clinical and metabolic genetics services at HMC and this symposium marks the expansion of the medical genetics services for the people of Qatar.” “The clinical and metabolic genetics centre evaluates and treats more than 3,000 patients every year,” clinical and metabolic genetics department head Dr Tawfeg Ben-Omran said. He said that the department has pre-martial counselling, newborn screening facilities, as well laboratory to test and treat genetic diseases. “With early diagnosis and effective treatment now in place, reducing the incidence of complications later in life, HMC has created a niche for itself in genetic disease treatment centres in the GCC,” Dr Ben-Omran said. Patients from Saudi Arabia, Oman and other Arab countries are coming here for treatment, he said. “Our genetic consultants and dieticians guide the families in prevention of genetic diseases, which can be passed on to babies from their parents,” Dr Ben-Omran added. |
