Sheikha Mozah in Iraq education talks

HH Sheikha Mozah Nasser al-Misnad, Unesco’s Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education, met in Baghdad yesterday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Discussions during the meeting dealt with means of the supporting the educational system in Iraq and ways to develop it, as per the national requirements for establishing good education.
Sheikha Mozah stressed that her visit to Baghdad came within the framework of supporting issues of rights to education as general and education in crises situation in particular, and her interest in supporting the system of education in Iraq, which was represented in setting up a fund in support of higher education and launching the initiative for supporting Iraqi academicians.
She further said that her visit came in implementation of the recommendations of the Unesco’s Conference held in Paris last November on protection of educational systems in situations of crisis, the Iraqi case.
HH Sheikha Mozah during the meeting presented the plans prepared by the Follow-up Committee which was set up following the Paris conference, to be immediately implemented in four years time starting 2009 to 2013 through the following programmes:
First, organising an international scientific conference in Baghdad on the Iraqi national education identity.
Secondly, setting up new Iraqi syllabuses and training Iraqi experts for this purpose.
Thirdly, rehabilitation of the higher education system on the level capabilities building and plans development.
Fourthly, drawing up plans for training trainers and training of teachers in all disciplines.
Fifthly, developing and implementing the non-formal education programme and literacy for the benefit of women, youth and children.
Sheikha Mozah expressed readiness to support the scientific research in Iraq as well as enabling Iraqi researchers to benefit from the research infrastructure of Science and Technology Park and the Researchers Fund of the Qatar foundation for Science, Education and Community Development (QF) in addition to providing opportunity for outstanding Iraqi students to pursue studies at the international universities centres at the Education City.
She issued directives to set up a mini-committee to prorgrammes implementable.
The meeting was attended by HE Dr Abdullah bin Hussein al-Kubaisi, Director of Sheikha Mozah’s office, Dr Abdul Jalil al-Hamnat, Adviser to Sheikha Mozah, Unseco’s Director General Koichiro, UN Secretary General’s representative for Iraq Staffan de Mistura, and Director of Unesco’s office in Iraq Mohamed Jalid.
On the Iraqi side, the meeting was attended by Education Minister Khedair al Khuzai, Higher Education Minister Abd Ziyab al-Ajaili, Minister of Science and Technology Raiyed Fahmi, Culture Minister Maher al-Hadaithi and Iraqi Ambassador to Qatar Jawad al-Hindawi.
