Math Web site adds its own challenge, subtracts boredom
Dr Rao launching the website as Ashraf Achoth looks on
A NEW Web site
www.invademath.com has been launched to inculcate interest in mathematics among school children.
P S Rao, a former judge with the International Court of Justice in The Hague, officially launched the site recently.
The website is the creation of Ashraf Achoth, a mathematics teacher of MES Indian School.
Achoth said the objective behind the initiative is to attract children towards learning maths through play with the help of computer.
“I have adopted the heuristic learning method in which the learner is given an opportunity to experiment and discover the concept by his or her own efforts,” he explained.
There are seven main components to the site. The first is self-motivated learning of math. It exploits the competitive spirit among the children and the scope of reward in class room teaching. This component of the site helps the teachers to observe a new method of curriculum delivery.
‘Kid math’ contains all the topics of KG maths. The lessons are given as presentations, through which a student can invent the concepts.
There are chapter-wise practice papers and model question papers for class XI and XII students.
Achoth said he has got very inspiring feedback for the games and puzzles on the site. “Students would sit and play those games for hours and they learn the basics of geometry and reasoning even without realising,” he added.
Rao highlighted the importance of learning mathematics. He said the knowledge in mathematics will provide an order for thoughts and deeds. It gives a proper discipline for the life.
MES School principal F M Basheer Ahmed lauded Achoth’s efforts and said the site will be useful for the people who love mathematics all over the world.
