QATAR and Saudi Arabia citizens now just need to show their nationality identity cards to cross the border on either side. The Minister of State for Interior Affairs HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani and Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud signed an agreement yesterday to ease travelling on the border.
GCC secretary general Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Attiyah welcomed the agreement, saying it would revive the trade across the border.
He was talking to reporters at the end of the GCC Interior Ministers meeting at the Sheraton.
The GCC secretary general said that a similar agreement would be signed between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait very soon, which would pave the way to say “good bye to the passports”.
The official said the ministers meeting was held without a schedule of issues and took up fight against terror and co-operation between the region’s state in anti-drug and maritime piracy.
“We are very much satisfied in the secretariat general of the co-operation in the security field.”
He said the ministers agreed to meet again in Doha in November, few weeks before the leader’s summit in the Omani capital Muscat.
