QATAR University (QU) is to implement ‘Millennium’ a new international library information management system, it was announced yesterday.
An agreement has been signed with Innovative Interfaces Inc, for the system which supports both Arabic as well as English interfaces.
‘Millennium’, includes modern modules covering basic library functions such as cataloguing, acquisition, serials and circulation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, QU vice-president for Academic Affairs Shaikha Jabor al-Thani stated that the new initiative is being implemented under project Rawafed, a part of QU’s focus on learner-based education and an important step in the master plan for new library facilities and upgraded services.
In addition, it also envisages building capacity of library personnel with a view to enhancing customer service activities.
“The Millennium system is right for QU especially as it supports Arabic and is also compatible with other systems being used throughout the university,” she observed.
Innovative’s vice-president of sales for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Maryvonne Enjolras said empowerment, participation, and faster delivery of service are the project’s main objectives to benefit students and academics alike.
The project will provide QU with a host of new and more technologically-advanced services. WebPAC Pro, Database Management System, Electronic Resources Management, Millennium Media Management and Research Pro are the various tools that will allow the institution and its users to access library catalogues and subscribed databases; as well as manage its relationship with suppliers of electronic services and equipment.
The system will be interfaced with MyQU Portal which is being launched this week. Implementation of the system is scheduled for April 2008.
“A project management team has been formed, the initiation phase has started and work is underway to assess QU library’s current environment and manpower to better prepare for the next phase,” project manager Saif al-Sweidi added.
