Staff Reporter SOCIETY of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) president Abdul Jaleel al-Khalifa addressed over 150 petroleum engineering faculty, students and industry professionals at a recent meeting at the Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) in Education City. Al-Khalifa was invited by SPE’s Qatar chapter’s chairperson, Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, to offer a lecture regarding the potential of the petroleum industry by the year 2020. In his lecture, al-Khalifa sited a few of the challenges facing the petroleum industry, as well as reasons for not being able to produce beyond the demand. The reasons, he stated, were related more to limitations in human resources and the business model of the industry and not technology and actual petroleum supply. Al-Khalifa is currently employed by Aramco in Saudi Arabia. His SPE presidency tops a record of voluntary work within SPE and its various sections. In 1998-1999, he served as an SPE distinguished lecturer on “Reservoir Management of Giant Oil Fields in Saudi Arabia”. In 1999, he received the SPE Middle East Region Award and in 2001 he was honoured with the SPE Middle East Region Award, which was followed by the SPE Distinguished Member Award in 2001. The Qatar Section of SPE was established in 1982 and currently has 270 members. Mahmood Amani, a faculty member in the Petroleum Engineering Programme at TAMUQ, serves as the liaison between the professional chapter and the student chapter at TAMUQ, which consists of 56 student members. |
