NYSLOTT, Finland: Far from the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, a Finn has emerged at the top of his game – in mobile phone-throwing, organisers of the event announced yesterday. Competitors were reduced to silence when Tommi Huotari threw his cellphone 82.62m at the eighth annual tournament in Finland, home of Nokia, the world’s number one handset manufacturer. Finns dominated the competition, with just one Canadian managing to come in 10th in the first 17 places, all of the rest going to Finns. Russian, German, American and Dutch contenders also took part. Last year’s female winner, Eija Laakso, also Finnish, repeated her victory with a 44.49m throw against Dutch rival Farah ElAiroudi, who only managed 42.06m. The freestyle competition – for more artistic approach with a cellphone – was won by Finnish “cowgirl” Elina Pitkanen and Dutch national Taco Cohen.
