Staff Reporter

QATAR University (QU) and Al Jazeera Network signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday to co-operate in the fields of studies, research, and training programmes. QU president Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad and Al Jazeera director general Wadah Khanfar were the signatories at the ceremony held at QU.
Al Jazeera is to provide avenues for practical experience to QU students from Engineering, Science, Computer, and Media departments through a programme of courses.
The network will offer facilities and support students in the preparations for their final projects, such as setting up a website for engineering and sciences or preparing documentary films for media students.
The MoU has mentioned that the two sides are to negotiate the possibility of establishing the Al Jazeera Professorial Chair in the Department of Media and Information Science at QU.
Al Jazeera will also supervise and oversee the establishment of a new media lab in QU, to help students acquire the latest technology and be trained on the latest in this field.
In addition, both sides will also agree on a plan of co-operation in organising conferences and seminars on media issues, aiming to increase the media awareness in the society.
A committee will be formed to follow the application of the terms of agreement and present a report every six months.
Both Prof al-Misnad and Khanfar hailed the MoU. “You cannot have a media programme and not have a tie-up with Al Jazeera,” observed the QU president.
Khanfar described the relationship between Al Jazeera and QU as organic and natural as both the organisations are concentrating on human beings.
