TAMUQ to host conference on Applied Maths

Staff Reporter
THE First Annual Doha Conference on Applied Mathematics and Computational Science will be hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) in Education City from May 20 to 23.
Internationally renowned scientists from China, Norway, Germany and the US will be speaking on various topics ranging from dynamical systems to immersive visualisation to groundwater modelling.
The conference is sponsored by TAMUQ, the office of the vice-president for research at TAMU, College Station, US, and Qatar’s Ministry of Agriculture and Municipal Affairs.
TAMU’s vice-president for research Dr Richard E Ewing said that a variety of experts from around the world who understand the critical role of monitoring and modelling will come together to discuss the important issues and share their knowledge, capabilities, expertise and experience in monitoring and modelling.
“Attendees will be from a wide variety of backgrounds, from mathematical modellers, to hydrologists, to hydrodynamicists, to environmental engineers, to experts in extraction of fluids from fractured carbonates, to users of models in the field, to policy makers and agency leadership,” he explained.
TAMU’s Mathematics, Computer Science and Aerospace Engineering professor Dr Michael Pilant observed that the conference, related workshop, and roundtable discussions will help define ways in which the combined expertise of TAMU, TAMUQ, and agencies within the Qatari government can work together to address problems of great importance to the Qatari people.
Dr Pilant also serves as the principal organiser of the conference and is the Mathematics and Science Programme co-ordinator for TAMUQ.
Following the workshop, there will be a roundtable discussion to identify areas of mutual interest and expertise, and lay the foundations for future interaction between TAMU, TAMUQ and Qatar.
The conference’s first two days are open to the public without registration fees.
