Staff Reporter QATAR has a huge potential for wind energy, a visiting businessman said yesterday. Addressing a luncheon meeting, Sanjeev Sardana, leader of an Indian business delegation, pointed out that his country was the world’s second largest producer of the green energy and most of it was produced in coastal states such as Maharashtra, Tamilnadu and Kerala. With the sea surrounding the peninsula on all the three sides, Qatar could easily tap wind energy, he said. Sardana was heading an Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA) delegation which was on a three-nation tour of the region. The delegates left Doha for home yesterday. Making a presentation on IEEMA, Sardana said India is capable of producing quality equipment necessary for power generation, transmission and distribution. Some 65% of the world population still had no electricity. As such there is tremendous opportunity for power generating companies, he stressed. Besides supplying standard products, Indian companies could also make tailor-made goods in partnership with others, he said. They already have tie-ups in a number of countries including Britain, Australia and the US, Sardana told the guests. Indian Ambassador Dr George Joseph said Qatar presented an excellent opportunity to be suppliers and partners. The ambassador pointed out that Qatar currently occupies the No. 2 spot in GDP and would soon climb to the top slot. In construction, industrialisation and third country ventures Qatar was racing ahead, the ambassador said. He pointed out that rather than objective analysis, subjective prejudices often determined the way business was conducted. The lunch was hosted by IEEMA, jointly with the Indian Business and Professional Network (IBPN) and the Indian embassy. IBPN chairman Ganesh Srinivasan, welcoming the guests, said his association facilitated marketing by Indian businesses and sought to promote Brand India abroad. He appreciated IEEMA for choosing Qatar for its visit and offered all support from IBPN to ensure their efforts were successful. |
