Charles visits Kuwait military college
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla share a light moment with Kuwaiti Parliament Speaker Jassem al-Khorafi and his wife yesterday
KUWAIT CITY:
Britain’s Prince Charles yesterday visited Kuwait’s joint command and staff college, which is run jointly with British military experts, after meetings with the state’s leaders.
On the second day of a four-day visit to the emirate as part of a Gulf tour, the heir to the British throne also toured an exhibition by young Kuwaiti businessmen at Kuwait University.
The exhibition was organised by students and young graduates who started their own businesses under the Youth Business International programme which was created 25 years ago by the Prince’s Trust.
“We have created some 70,000 new businesses in the past 25 years,” through the programme, the prince said in a brief speech.
He said the programme is now operating in neighbouring Saudi Arabia as well as in 35 other countries with the aim of helping young people move from school to the workplace.
At the staff college, Prince Charles observed a maritime warfare tactical floor exercise in the model room conducted by students.
He also met with members of the British military mission, British staff of the college and students of various nationalities.
Established in 1995 as a Kuwaiti-British partnership, the college has so far trained more than 700 army officers from Kuwait and other countries, chiefly Gulf states.
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla arrived in Kuwait on Monday at the start of a tour that will also take them to Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
The Duchess of Cornwall separately visited the Kuwait Association for the Care of Children at Hospital, a non-profit organisation that looks after ill children.
The Prince’s office in London said the tour is designed to “reinforce Britain’s friendship with key allies.” - AFP
