Business Reporter HSBC has announced a seven-year $70,000 scholarship for financially disadvantaged students pursuing medical course at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q). Kevin Smorthwaite, HSBC Qatar chief executive officer, presented a cheque of $10,000 which represents the first annual payment to Dr Daniel R Alonso, WCMC-Q dean and Dr Charles Young, Qatar Foundation president. The college's admissions committee will select students on the basis of merit and their potential to enhance their countries' prosperity and health, an HSBC Qatar release yesterday said. “HSBC's contribution is welcome in providing funds for scholarship support. This financial assistance will help contribute to the fulfilment of the shared mission of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and the Qatar Foundation by assuring that economics is not an impediment for a student to achieve his or her intellectual potential and to maximise their contribution to society,” Dr Alonso pointed out. “HSBC is pleased to support such a renowned education organisation as Weill Cornell. Education is a core activity within our sponsorship programme and we are pleased to be able to contribute to the welfare of the community through this scholarship endorsement,” Smorthwaite said. l HSBC Qatar is holding a HeadStart Savings Day and Garangao night for the bank's HeadStart account holders at the bank's premises on Thursday.
