Qatar has agreed to fund the projects related to justice, prisoners, youth and education that were highlighted by the Doha Declaration adopted by the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
An agreement to this effect  between Qatar and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was signed in Vienna, Austria, on Friday.
On behalf of Qatar, the deal was signed by Maj Gen Dr Abdullah Yousuf al-Mal, adviser to HE the Minister of Interior who is also chairman of the Doha Declaration Implementation Committee, and for UNODC by its executive director Yury Fedotov.
The signing ceremony was  attended by the permanent representative of Qatar to the UN in Vienna, Ali bin Khalfan al-Mansouri.
Projects under the agreement include strengthening judicial integrity and the prevention of corruption, fostering the rehabilitation and social integration of prisoners and preventing youth crime through sports and a major initiative called Education for Justice.
The funding will be used to continue advancing the Doha Declaration and ensure that the UNODC develop projects and programmes that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. These projects will help people and communities in almost 80 nations, especially developing and least developed countries.
“Viewed as a lasting legacy of the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, held in Doha in April this year, the agreement is intended to help countries achieve positive and sustainable impact on criminal justice and the rule of law in all regions of the world,” a statement noted, stressing that “the signing of the agreement reflected Qatar’s commitment to the rule of law and justice”.
The Doha Declaration articulates a global commitment to crime prevention and criminal justice. It calls for fair criminal justice systems, upholding human rights, preventing corruption and enhancing transparency and promoting child and youth concerns within the criminal justice system, among others.
