The quality of teachers’ performance and improving their efficiency would be among the top priorities of the new school year alongside raising the academic level of students, HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Secretary General of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) Dr Mohamed bin Abdulwahid al-Hammadi affirmed yesterday.
During a meeting with the licence holders and directors of Independent Schools, in connection with the new school year which begins on September 6, HE Dr al-Hammadi urged them to be strict regarding the implementation of all related laws and regulations that organise the education process. Every individual involved in the process should fully assume his responsibility.
He also talked about the various initiatives, strategies and programmes devised by the SEC in the best interests of Independent Schools students, management and staff. There are more than 70 new initiatives with some of them still under implementation. These include putting a general framework for a national curriculum, improving the linguistic and arithmetic skills of students, the creation of four new schools for the students of class five and six at suitable schools, teaching of the visual arts subjects, opening of “Rw’aa” (Visions) centre for the support and follow up of students with special needs, and enhancing academic guidance programmes to offer students more consultation services.
The new strategies include implementing a new seven -year strategy for the SEC, increasing the number of Independent Schools, introducing new departments at the SEC, improving E-services, development of adult education, and development of the system of teachers’ professional licences in addition to other various programmes to improve the professional performance of teachers.  
A new office has been introduced at the SEC to take care of teachers’ affairs. It is tasked with suggesting and implementing the procedures regarding recruiting new teachers of high calibre. Also, there is a training centre for teachers at the SEC to respond to the needs of teachers in the field.
HE Dr al-Hammadi asked the stakeholders to maintain serious and constant class follow-up of students’ progress.
