Registration for the Fath Al Khair 2 voyage will conclude tomorrow at Katara - the Cultural Village.
So far, 26 participants have registered for the voyage to India, which is scheduled to launch in October.
Ahmed al-Hatmi, director of the beaches department and head of the organising committee, said the turnout of young people in the registration process has been considerably high.
“We have received many enquiries from young Qataris who are enthusiastic about the voyage. This enhances their relationship with the heritage of the ancestors,” he said.
The 26 applicants have cleared the medical examination and will undergo a fitness test from August 30 to September 3. Every participant has to pass seven tests, which include swimming for 100m over two stages of 50m each, a floating test for one minute and lifting heavy loads (50kg), to ensure that they are physically fit to undergo the voyage.
The journey will start on October 1. The dhow will arrive at Sur, Oman, on October 15 and is scheduled to reach India on October 25. During the return trip, it will reach Muscat, Oman, on November 15 before arriving in Doha on November 17, coinciding with the launch of the fifth Traditional Dhows Festival at Katara.
