Indiscriminate digging for infrastructure development works being carried out in Najma has led to power failure in a few buildings of the area on Saturday morning.
The disruption led to maintenance workers in one of the buildings to be trapped twice in a lift in sweltering conditions for durations of over over 30 minutes.
In the first instance three tiling workers were held up for nearly 30 minutes as the power went off while the lift was moving down. The company which is in charge of its maintenance sent personnel to open the lift using the emergency key and rescued the trapped workers.
Hardly half an hour later, there was another power failure and a cleaning worker was trapped this time in the same lift. As the lift maintenance team had already returned after their first assignment, they had to be summoned again for rescuing the worker, who had to face very hot conditions for nearly 40 minutes.
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) personnel who rushed to the spot to restore power attributed the failure to the “indiscriminate digging” taking place  for changing the pipeline on the Najma Street.
Owing to the unexpected power disruption, it is understood that some of the occupants of apartments in the building are now avoiding lifts, especially while coming down.
