The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has helped 42 Indian workers in transfer of their sponsorship, local daily Arrayah has reported. The transfer was facilitated through the efforts of the Indian help desk at the NHRC, it said.
Kareem Abdulla, representative of the Indian expatriate community at the NHRC help desk, told the daily that the facility had started functioning six months earlier than the official launch of other expatriate community offices at the NHRC.
So far the Indian help desk has received 160 petitions from the workers, seeking its intervention mainly on such issues as the sponsorship transfer, renewal of residency permit, delayed payment of salary and complaints about accommodation.
At the NHRC, help desks of the Nepal, Egyptian, and Filipino communities are also functioning.
Abdulla said the help desks have made things easier for expatriate workers as they could submit their representations to the local authorities now.
The requests would be reviewed and referred to the NHRC legal affairs department, where each complaint is classified and investigated before being ultimately referred to the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior (MoI).
Abdulla also said the NHRC has helped many workers resolve their issues, including sponsorship transfer, residency permit renewal or repatriation and other issues, the daily added.
