Luigi Maria Monti Foundation and Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE) have announced plans for Mater Olbia Hospital, a specialised hospital and medical research centre in Olbia, Sardinia, Italy.
Following a signing for acquisition of the site in Olbia by QFE through its European investment platform, Luigi Maria Monti Foundation and QFE plan to complete and fully fit out the existing property, the first phase of which is scheduled to open at the end of 2015.
This project represents a significant financial investment in the region.
Mater Olbia Hospital will provide high-quality care for residents of Sardinia and the wider region, with 290 new hospital beds, serving both public and private patients. Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital will manage the paediatric department of the hospital.
“We are delighted that our investment received overwhelming support from the Italian authorities. This is a great investment opportunity for QFE as we firmly believe Mater Olbia Hospital will become a world-class hospital and medical research centre, benefiting patients in Sardinia and all around the world,” said Rashid al-Naimi, CEO at QFE.
“I’m pleased that the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation has been invited to collaborate in the management of this investment, in line with our commitment in healthcare. This is a landmark investment and a vote of confidence from one of the most respected investors in the world. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with QFE,” said Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, chairman of the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation.
“As a leading operator of children’s hospitals at a national and international level, our duty will be to ensure the clinical management of the paediatric department of the new Mater Olbia Hospital,” said Dr Mariella Enoc, president of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital.
The hospital will offer a wide range of services, including cardiovascular, neurological, orthopaedic and paediatric specialities, as well as a rehabilitation centre. It is envisaged that Mater Olbia Hospital will be Istituto Di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico- and Joint Commission International-accredited – the first such facility in Sardinia. Studies will also be conducted on certain lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, which are common to the people of both Sardinia and the Middle East.
Further, Mater Olbia Hospital will develop a network of close strategic alliances with a variety of leading hospitals and research centres, including Sidra Medical and Research Center, Hamad Medical Corporation, research centres within Qatar Foundation (including its worldwide research network), research centres of the universities of Sassari and Cagliari, and research centres within Sardinia and Italy.
QFE is a long-term global investor with a broad mandate to make direct and managed investments.
