79 teams comprising 158 students from 35 schools participated in the contest that requires students to programme a robot that will perform tasks within a limited time. The department held two workshops to orient participating schools on competition guidelines and to provide supervision on students’ projects.
CENG dean Dr Rashid al-Ammari applauded the winners and their supervisor Mohamed Ahmed Elsied Ibrahim as well as the 2nd and 3rd place finalists Mahmoud Esameldin Sewify and Yahya Hamdy Abdelatty from Tarek bin Zeyad Independent Secondary School for Boys supervised by Ahmad Salah Azazi and Shahd Iyad Alroobi and Kheloud Khaled Zayed from Amna bint Wahab Independent Secondary School for Girls supervised by Ola Mohammed Othman.
Dr al-Ammari thanked contest sponsors QARCO, Dolphin Energy and ExxonMobil for supporting CENG’s efforts to prepare Qatari engineers who can bring the Qatar National Vision 2030 to reality.
He highlighted the importance of this contest in reaching out to secondary school students, to raise their awareness of CENG programmes and help develop their computing skills in general and robot programming in particular.
“Over the past few years, the Qatar University Computing Contest  has successfully created a platform that engages and fosters a generation of future engineers, IT experts, and other professionals who will be tackling the challenges of the 21st century,” said ExxonMobil Qatar president and general manager Alistair Routledge.
Dolphin Energy Qatar general manager Adel Ahmed Albuainain said: “It is important that we support initiatives that contribute to the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Computing Contest has given us the opportunity to do just that. By engaging and encouraging students to become future experts in science and engineering we hope to create leaders who will help shape the country’s future success.”
