Women’s representation in the Central Municipal Council (CMC) has increased to two as results of the fifth round of the CMC elections were announced around midnight yesterday.
“As many as 14,670 voters who constituted 69.8% of the total of 21,735 registered voters, exercised their franchise in the polls conducted for 26 constituencies,” Brigadier Majid Ibrahim al-Khulaifi, director of the Election Department and chairman of the supervisory committee of the elections, said.
Three constituencies were won uncontested earlier. The number of candidates was 109, including five women.
The winners are the following (starting from constituency number one): Jassim Abdulla Jassim al-Malki, Saeed Rashid Saeed al-Hajri, Hamad Khalid Khalifa al-Kubaisi, Khalid Abdulla Issa Ahmed al-Hitmi, Mohamed Salem Mohamed al-Marri, Hamad Khalid Ahmed Mohamed al-Ghanim, Abdulla Saeed Abdulla Khamis al-Sulaiti, Sheikha Yousef Hassan al-Jufairi, Fatma Ahmed Khalfan al-Jeham al-Kuwari, Abdulrahman Abdulla Mohamed Ali al-Khulaifi, Abdulla Salem Saeed Saad al-Khuwar, Mohamed Ali Mohamed al-Homr al-Azbah, Mohamed Hamad Mohamed al-Marri, Mohamed Hamoud Shafi al-Shafi, Mubarak Frayish Mubarak Saleh Salem, Mohamed Saleh Rashid al-Khayarin al-Hajri, Ali Nasser Issa al-Kaabi, Meshaal Abdulla Saqr Ziyab al-Nuaimi, Hamad Haadi al-Bareedi al-Marri, Mansoor Ahmed Yousef al-Khater, Naef Ali Mohamed Mayqah al-Ahbabi, Khalid Abdulla Mohamed al-Ghali al-Marri, Mohamed Zafar Mohamed al-Hajri, Mohamed Faisal Mubarak al-Shehwani, Nasser Ibrahim Mohamed Issa al-Mohannadi, Hamad Lahdan Ali al-Mohannadi, Rabea Hamad Ajlan al-Kaabi, Saeed Mubarak Saeed Ali al-Rashidi, and Nasser Hassan al-Kubaisi.
The voting was held from 8am to 5pm. Current CMC chairman Saud al-Hinzab lauded the electoral process as he cast his vote. “The turnout of voters was considerably good, due to the positive image built up by the present council,” stated al-Hinzab who opted not to run during this elections. Page 8
